Job Summary:
The Welder/Mechanic is the primary welder within the Division. They are “multifunctional” employees who have the welding and maintenance skills and expertise to perform qualified work on Division Mobile and Fix assets. They are expected to perform and “lead” welding projects, repairs, preventive maintenance for the maintenance department.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Pass the job description physical capacity functions test.
• Must possess own personal tools to perform required welding and maintenance tasks.
• Must have and maintain in good standing a valid DOT medical certificate and valid Hawaii State Driver’s License.
• Achieve Stick, All Positions, Unlimited Certification (AWS D1.1 - SMAW Structural Welding) from an accredited American Welding Society Testing Facility
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Able to work a flexible schedule, to include holidays and weekends, according to operational requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
• 2-year Associates Degree in Welding, Metal Fabrication.
• Gas or Diesel Power Mechanic Experience.
Additional Information
• Perform daily equipment, walk around and site inspections to identify and correct any unsafe conditions and keep equipment properly maintained. Standard pre- and post-operational services utilizing Company programs/procedures (oil, water, fuel, tires, etc.) when required.
• Operates company equipment to include DOT required Class B equipment.
• Performs basic and specialized welding required in fabricating of structural components in plant facilities and other welding work necessary in the repair and maintenance of equipment on various types of metals consisting of mild steel, specialty/galvanized pipe, high carbon steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and brass.
• Operates welding machine, acetylene torch and other welding or shop equipment as required.
• Use of specific types of welding rods when necessary to make specialized and basic welds in all positions - unlimited.
• Reads blueprints, lays out, fabricates, and cuts and must be able to calculate time and material to complete the fabrication. Interpret welding symbols and complete welding tasks as per the blueprints.
• Operate manual or semi-automatic flame cutting equipment.
• Operate brazing and soldering equipment.
• Operate angle grinders to prepare the parts that must be welded.
• Test and inspect welded surfaces and structure to discover flaws.
• Maintain equipment in a condition that does not compromise safety.
• Conduct project review and planning.
• Follows established procedures in preparing necessary reports, requisitions, etc.
• Assists other tradesmen on trouble calls and repairs as assigned.
• Directs the work of trades helpers and other tradesperson where their assistance is needed.
• Inspects, tests, diagnoses equipment malfunctions and in the process repairs various heavy stationary and mobile equipment including but not limited to shovels, batch plants, crushers, scrubbers, cranes, loaders, skid steers, welding machines, bulldozers, quarry trucks, mixer trucks, forklifts, compressors, etc.; overhauls rebuilds equipment components and makes repairs.
• Performs the various duties of a mechanic such as inspecting and repairing vehicles, machines, yellow iron, gearboxes, tail pulleys, jaw dies, etc.
• Diagnoses faults with the aid of software and digital tools, repairing and replacing faulty parts, performing test drives or operational procedures to check repairs.
• Conduct safety inspections and maintenance checks
• Builds and assembles machines or mechanical components.
• Keeps an accurate log of all work performed.
• Drives pickups, tow trucks, operates and road test. Must have and maintain in good standing a valid DOT medical certificate.
• Uses hand and power tools common to his trade such as wrenches, hammers, hoists, drills, grinders, feeler gauges, indicators, engine testing equipment, etc.
• Performs established periodic P.M. checks as required.
• Services (cleans, oils and lubes) assigned equipment.
• Follows established procedures in preparing necessary reports, requisitions, etc.
• May do pipe installation work.
• Operates mobile equipment such as forklift, telehandler, manlifts, etc.
• Responsible for cleanliness and proper appearance of work area.
• Able to work effectively on odd shifts with minimal supervision.
• Must be available and willing to fill in extended hours on short notice as needed.
• Always works safely and takes action to prevent all unsafe actions, processes and behaviors. Observes and follows all safety rules and procedures, including wearing required personal safety equipment. Immediately informs supervisor of safety violations.
• Promotes company’s Mission and Vision statements.
• Performs other qualified tasks.
Key Skills & Competencies
• *Professional Certification (e.g. an AWS welding certificate) will be REQUIRED.
• Proven experience as certified AWS welder
• Experience using a variety of welding equipment and procedures (SMAW, TIG, MIG etc.)
• Experience in using electrical or manual tools (saws, squares, calipers, grinders, etc.)
• Ability to read and interpret technical documents and drawings.
• Knowledge of relative safety standards and willingness to use protective clothing (face-shield, gloves etc.),
• Hard Facing, oxygen/acetylene welding, and brazing.
• Proficient in plasma cutting, oxygen/acetylene cutting, tempering, flame straightening, air carbon-arc cutting, sheet metal cutting/bending, and pipe bending.
• Precision and attention to detail.
• Proficient in English
• Troubleshoots Division equipment issues and identify parts using schematics and parts manuals.
• Knows how to successfully Lock Out and Tag Out equipment using Company procedures.
• Obtain and maintain Hawaiian Cement Forklift Class V, IV certification.
• Communicates clearly and professionally with customers, suppliers, inspectors, and co-workers.
• Follow written and oral instructions.
• Able to read and comprehend equipment and operations manuals.
• Able to work in varying environments, from air-conditioned office to dusty, noisy field conditions.
• Be physically able to climb stairs and ladders or other physically demanding tasks necessary in performing field inspections up to 80ft high.
• Occasional lifting and carrying heavy items weighing 75 pounds.
• Able to work in a non-smoking workplace.
