Knife River has an excellent opportunity for a Staff Accountant.

This position is responsible for multiple accounting functions primarily associated with the inventory process. Ensures deadlines are met and accounting processes are handled in a timely manner. Also supports team by performing various and changing accounting duties as needed. Must be willing to learn all aspects of the job (in detail) and support the team in a variety of circumstances.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and physical.
- Must meet Knife River-South employment standards with regards to background/MVR checks.
- Must be able to work overtime and be flexible with hours (daytime/nighttime).
- Must have a “safety first” attitude. Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures is required.
- Associate’s degree in business, finance or accounting, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 3+ years accounting experience, including experience with cost accounting.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proven knowledge and application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Proficient with Microsoft Office programs with an intermediate to advanced ability with Microsoft Excel.
- Knowledge of accounting software (JDE) and electronic routing and storage software a plus
- Must be reliable and dependable during crucial accounting periods, i.e., month, quarter, and year end close.
- Must maintain confidentiality of financial data.
- Must be adaptable and able to multitask and manage priorities in periods of peak volume.
- May require overtime from time to time to meet month-end close deadlines.
- Maintain composure under pressure and meet deadlines with great attention to detail of deliverables.
Duties and/or Responsibilities
- Inventory processing for the South Region Operations (Ready Mix, Quarries, Material Yards, Asphalt, etc.) including preparing purchase orders, receiving materials, scanning/vouchering for payment, etc.).
- Reconcile and balance inventory items received to production quantities, consumptions, bill of ladings, production reports, and other internal reporting data.
- Inventory item maintenance, including standard cost updates, adding new products, etc.
- Calculate inventory adjustments related to physical inventory measurements from the use of flyover or other plant data.
- Frequently collaborate with plant personnel to investigate and troubleshoot issues within inventory or billing.
- Prepare daily and monthly reports for management.
- Support month-end, quarter-end and year-end close process.
- Preparation of journal entries, including all appropriate back-up information.
- Preparation of detailed balance sheet account reconciliations.
- Prepare and update work instructions to assist with department cross-training.
- Assist in establishing, maintaining, and enhancing accounting controls and procedures.
- Always work safely and take action to prevent any and all unsafe actions, processes, and behaviors.
- Complete necessary paperwork with high degree of accuracy for maintaining account records.
- Communicate effectively and professionally at all times with co -workers, plant personnel and external partners.
- Must maintain the highest level of confidentiality at all times.
- Travel may be required.
- Other duties as assigned.
