Assistant Controller

Job Summary:
Prepares and/or manages the development and administration of the company’s financial operating plan and five-year forecasts. Responsible for assisting in maintaining adequate and proper ledger accounts of all assets, liabilities and transactions of the company and ensures that audits are performed as directed. Prepares and reports financial results that conform to generally accepted accounting principles and internal control requirements. Interacts with managers, supervisors, sales personnel and department heads.

Duties and/or responsibilities:

1. *Prepares, supervises and/or reviews all journal entries and accounting transactions affecting general ledger accounts; audits the account balances and prepares monthly financial statements.
2. *Prepares and/or directs the coordination, preparation and administration of the company annual operating plan and five-year forecasts.
3. *Maintains adequate accounting records of all assets, liabilities, and transactions of the company.
4. Assists in determining depreciable rates. Assists fleet managers and operations personnel with various equipment and PP&E analysis and reporting requirements.
5. *Prepares and interprets financial statements, cost data, and management reports of the company. Assists other executives, managers and supervisors in analyzing financial results, as needed.
6. Prepares other external reports to government agencies and third parties as required.
7. *Assists in processes to ensure accounting controls are adequate for the protection of assets and the reliability of financial and management information reporting.
8. Ensure bank statements are reconciled.
9. Manages various external audits (sales tax, property tax, etc.)
10. Assists in managing the accounting department, including staffing needs and career development.
11. Provides assistance and analysis on special projects or activities within operating departments, as directed.
12. Assists in arranging audits with internal and/or independent external auditors. Provides assistance as necessary.
13. Assists with the preparation of company department budgets, handles correspondence and may provide review of employee benefit plans.
14. * Always work safely and take action to prevent any and all unsafe actions, processes, and behaviors.
15. Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITITES (types and extent of knowledge, skills or abilities an incumbent must possess to complete the job responsibilities satisfactorily)

1. Advanced computer skills using spreadsheet, presentation, databases and accounting software..
2. Advanced knowledge and application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
3. Accounting experience in general ledger accounting and auditing; financial forecasting and budgeting and financial reporting.
4. Exposure to and experience with Sarbanes Oxley compliance requirements desirable.
5. Professional communication skills including written and verbal for internal and external customers.
Minimum Qualifications:

1. Four year accounting degree.
2. Five years of experience in accounting management and/or supervisory positions.
3. Strong analytical and financial skills.
4. High ethical and moral standards.
5. Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS (preferred requirements i.e. certifications, software use, etc.)

1. CPA certificate preferred.
2. Five years accounting experience in the construction industry.
